The TV Shows I chose to compare are Saved by The Bell which is from the 3rd screen TV era which ran from 1989 to 1992 and Gossip Girl which is a show from the 4th screen TV era this show aired from 2007 to 2012. Saved by the Bell was a television show about a group of friends that face day to day adversities. The show began with a middle school spin-off called Good Morning Ms. Bliss. into High School and transitioned all the way to college. Some of the challenges the show portrayed were bullying, drug use and social acceptance amongst friends and peers. Saved by the Bell was one of the most popular TV shows amongst the younger generation during the 90’s. It had a very controlled and restricted delivery of its messages. Although there were many relationships within the show like Zack and Kelly and Slater and Jessie you would never see more than holding hands, occasional hugs or a tap kiss on the lips. This showed targeted tweens, teenagers and young adults. It created a platform for the younger generation to see that everyone has challenges, deal with adversities and social issues. The show delivered a message in each and every episode. From Jessie's addiction to caffeine pills, and Zacks slacking off at school, to Lisa learning you can't always get by on looks and a pretty smile. Saved by The Bell was revolutionary because it was one of the first TV shows that focused on a modern day issues in a Middle School and High School setting amongst a group of friends. Focusing on their dynamic they delivered the message on how to surpass day to day struggles. In comparison, Gossip Girl was very explicit with their storyline. The show did not hold back on displaying the realities that go on in High School from drug use, sex, violence with a cast portraying sophomores and juniors. The students in Gossip Girl were all very wealthy upper East side snobs that got whatever they wanted whenever they threw a tantrum. Gossip girl unlike Saved By The Bell created a different type of platform. Gossip Girls platform was more clear-cut in my opinion anyway. Although, stereotypical it did hit home on many levels. Unlike Saved by The Bell, these students had cars, houses in the Hamptons, lived in penthouses and wore Gucci shoes to school. In Saved by the bell these students came from humble beginnings whose parent were middle class and worked hard to give them what they had. The restriction in Gossip Girl was very minimal whereas the content in Saved by the Bell was extremely restricted as to how they delivered their story. Production and content for Gossip Girl was revolutionary because their show was like no other High School television series. Gossip girl dug deep into the life of Upper East Side snobbish teens accessible to Drugs, parties, sex, boys and exposed the absence of parental guidance. The show displayed what for some is a reality bringing to light what many people believe and know to be the life of The Upper East Side. The production of the show was true to the era of the script because much of the show was shot on the Upper East side.
